Welcome to our series, “ableFamilies in Real Life,” where we celebrate the everyday victories, challenges, and heartwarming moments of ableFamilies. We’re excited to introduce you to Tosha—a dedicated mom—and her daughter Karmyn from Georgia. As they navigate their journey with the QuickTalker Freestyle, Tosha, Karmyn and their family show us how encouragement, creativity, and a loving family spirit can help every member grow and connect in meaningful ways.

Family First

Meet Tosha, a devoted mom, her 17-year-old son, and her 10-year-old daughter, Karmyn. Since August 2025, Karmyn has been using the QuickTalker to help her communicate and connect with her family.

Tosha is a creative spirit who enjoys making jewelry, cooking, and listening to music. Her son loves Xbox, fashion, and social media, while Karmyn is all about food, watching cooking videos on YouTube, taking long baths, and playing outdoors. Tosha feels blessed to have such humble and laid-back kids.

Communication and Connection

Karmyn is determinedshe’ll point and pull until she gets what she wants, and Tosha encourages her to use her QuickTalker Freestyle to help express herself. “It helps alleviate some of the guessing,” Tosha shares. Like a true mama bear, Tosha wants her kids to always know she has their best interest at heart.

Making the QuickTalker Part of Daily Life

Mornings are when Karmyn is most motivated, so Tosha keeps the QuickTalker Freestyle nearby. They use it most around mealtimes, getting dressed, and during Karmyn’s hygiene routine. Early on, Karmyn was eager to explore all the buttons, which turned out to be a great way to learn. Now, she’s more intentional with her commands.

One of her favorite moments is seeing how excited Karmyn is to use her QuickTalker during speech therapy—what once felt like a chore is now something she looks forward to.

Advice for Other Families

Advice for Families

Tosha’s advice for other families just starting out? “Let her be as independent as possible when using the QuickTalker and know that it’s okay if she gets something wrong the first, second, or third time around.”
