Happy National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! | Explore Support & Services for SLPs
Meet Alyssa and her two‑year‑old son, Floyd, who is already showing just how powerful communication can be when given the right tools. Floyd was diagnosed with moderate hearing loss as a newborn and currently uses hearing aids. While he is not yet officially diagnosed, Alyssa shares that he has a high chance of being diagnosed with autism as he gets older. From early on, Alyssa knew Floyd had things to say, he just needed another way to express them.
Communication in their home looks a little different, especially in a busy family of seven. Alongside spoken language, Floyd relies on his hearing aids and his QuickTalker Freestyle to communicate non‑verbally. Since introducing the device just three months ago, Alyssa has seen meaningful changes. The QuickTalker Freestyle has given Floyd the ability to communicate feelings and desires he couldn’t express before, helping reduce frustration and opening the door to stronger family connections.
One of the biggest shifts has been in how Floyd interacts with those around him. The QuickTalker Freestyle has allowed for deeper bonding between Floyd and his family—moments that feel more connected, intentional, and joyful. Alyssa says one of her favorite recent moments is when Floyd clearly communicates what he wants instead of simply accepting whatever he’s given. Those small moments feel huge.
To support Floyd’s communication, the QuickTalker Freestyle has truly become part of daily life. The device has a “home” in every room, ensuring Floyd always has access to his words no matter where he is. Alyssa believes that visibility and consistency have played a key role in helping Floyd feel comfortable using his device.
Looking back, Alyssa wishes she had enrolled Floyd in speech services earlier so he could have started this journey sooner. That reflection has shaped how she approaches his communication today, reinforcing just how valuable early support and access to AAC can be. Even in just a few months, Alyssa has seen how the QuickTalker Freestyle has opened doors for Floyd—giving him a way to express his needs, preferences, and feelings instead of simply accepting what’s given to him.
As Floyd continues to grow, Alyssa is learning alongside him, celebrating each new attempt and every moment of clarity. The journey has reminded her that progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful. With consistency, patience, and access to the right tools, Floyd is building confidence and connection one step at a time—and their family grows right alongside him.
