MYTH:

AAC users must start with low-tech solutions.  

FACT:

ASHA recommends starting learners with high-tech speech devices. Presuming competence helps everyone communicate effectively!

MYTH:

Users must meet specific criteria to use a high-tech speech device.

FACT:

Research shows there are no prerequisites for using a speech device. To develop skills, AAC users simply need the right tools, strategies, and support. 

MYTH:

If a client doesn’t immediately show interest in a device, it’s not the right fit.

FACT:

Just like learning a new language, mastering a device takes time and practice. Providing models and support helps provide best outcomes.

MYTH:

A client can be too young for high-tech AAC device.

FACT:

Early integration of AAC, regardless of age, significantly boosts language, communication, and cognitive development.

MYTH:

Using a speech device hinders verbal speech production.

FACT:

Research shows high-tech AAC devices can actually support and enhance verbal speech development.
