Celebrating Abilities, Embracing Diversity: Expert Insights from Sandy Dorsey, MA, CCC-SLP, TSHH

In this inspiring conversation, we explore the incredible work of a dedicated leader in the field of speech-language pathology who is making a global impact. In this interview, Sandy Dorsey, MA, CCC-SLP, TSHH, shares her journey of building a non-profit to support individuals with developmental disabilities around the world and her approach to celebrating abilities, embracing diversity, and creating inclusive, strength-based therapy practices that empower both individuals and their families.

What inspired you to start your non-profit and provide resources to individuals with developmental disabilities across the globe?

My journey began in the vibrant and diverse communities of New York City, where I witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by marginalized individuals with developmental disabilities. This experience fueled my desire to bridge the gap and extend resources to those around the world who lack access. I wanted to empower these individuals and their families, offering them hope and the tools to help themselves.

How do you approach speech therapy for individuals with developmental disabilities in a way that celebrates their unique abilities and builds on their strengths?

I believe that every individual has a unique story to tell, and I start by discovering their interests. These interests often reveal their strengths and serve as a source of motivation in therapy. By focusing on what they love, we can celebrate their abilities and build a therapeutic journey that is both empowering and effective.

What role does collaboration with families and other professionals play in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, and how can we use a team approach to support long-term growth?

Collaboration is the heartbeat of our work. Families are the experts on their loved ones, and by learning from them, we can tailor our approach to align with their values and techniques. A team of dedicated professionals brings diverse perspectives, and when we collaborate effectively, we create a synergy that accelerates progress and fosters long-term growth.

What sparked your passion for pursuing a career in Speech-Language Pathology?

My passion for communication and helping others was ignited at a young age. I vividly remember trying to connect with my Uncle Henry as he navigated Alzheimer’s. Later, while studying broadcast journalism at Howard University, I discovered speech-language pathology. It was a perfect blend of my love for communication and my desire to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.

What is one thing you’ve learned in your Speech Therapy practice you wish all people knew?

The power of teamwork cannot be overstated. When parents and individuals see you as a partner in their journey, the therapy process becomes more successful and less stressful. Building a strong, collaborative relationship is the foundation for meaningful progress and lasting change.
