Learn About the Funding Process
About the Funding Process
I heard insurance will pay for a new iPad-based speech device for my child. What is required to qualify?
Why do I need my doctor in the funding process?
To obtain insurance funding for a speech device, insurance companies require that your doctor (as well as a Speech-Language Pathologist) feel the device is medically necessary. Your doctor will need to write a prescription for the QuickTalker Freestyle speech device.
What is required for insurance?
What happens after I submit the benefits check form?
Depending on the completeness of the information submitted, we will contact your insurance company to determine if the QuickTalker Freestyle speech device is a covered benefit. However, if we do not have contact information for your Speech-Language Pathologist or your physician, we will not be able to continue the process. You can contact us at (800) 322-0956 or email@example.com to provide that information once you have it.
I heard the funding process takes a long time. What is the typical time needed to apply and get a device “in-hand”?
Once we have confirmed that this device is a covered benefit and all proper paperwork has been received, your QuickTalker Freestyle speech device ships within 24 hours! The timeline depends on your Speech-Language Pathologist and physician providing the AbleNet funding team the paperwork we need to submit for insurance.

The Role of SLPs and Physicians
What is an SLP and why do I need one?
An SLP is a Speech-Language Pathologist. That person is a specialized clinical professional who diagnoses and treats a variety of speech conditions. You can learn more about the role of an SLP here. To obtain insurance funding for a speech device, insurance companies require that an SLP as well as your physician feel the device is medically necessary.
How do I find an SLP if I don’t already have one?
The American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) maintains a list of thousands of Speech-Language Pathologists all over the country. You can search their database here.
About Speech Devices
What is a speech device?
Speech devices can be simple devices (such as a BIGmack) that make only one sound or a small number of sounds, all the way up to complex devices that can synthesize speech. The QuickTalker Freestyle speech device is a powerful, yet easy-to-use device that uses familiar hardware and a speech app to help people communicate.
What if I already have a device but it’s a few years old and could use a new one. Will insurance cover it?
In some cases, the answer is yes! Each insurance provider has slightly different rules. If you would like to check to see if you are eligible for a new device, please submit a new benefits check form, making note of your prior funding.
Can I change the App(s) that come preloaded on my QuickTalker Freestyle speech device later?
Yes. If your Speech-Language Pathologist and you determine that a different app will work better for your child, the AbleNet technical support team can help you through the process of switching the app.
