New Year, New Possibilities in Speech Therapy:
Expert Insights from Rachel Musial, M.A., CCC-SLP

As we embrace the new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how to set meaningful goals and innovate in speech therapy practices. In this exclusive interview, Rachel Musial, M.A., CCC-SLP, shares her expert advice on how to refresh your approach to speech therapy in 2025 and beyond.

As we enter 2025, what are you most excited to implement in your speech therapy practice?

My own journey with ADHD has fueled a deep interest in understanding the complexities of executive functioning. I wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until I was 26 and it completely changed the way I viewed myself and the work that I do. My own experiences with ADHD have allowed me to connect with my clients on a deeper level, fostering a more empathetic and collaborative therapeutic relationship. I am excited to utilize this knowledge to develop personalized strategies that empower my clients to achieve their communication goals and enhance their overall quality of life.

What trends do you see shaping speech therapy in 2025, and how can SLPs stay ahead?

Oooh, this question is great! I think that the future of speech-language pathology is witnessing a growing emphasis on executive function. This shift is leading to a more holistic approach to intervention, focusing not only on traditional language skills but also on the underlying cognitive processes that impact communication. They truly go hand in hand.By embracing this trend and expanding their skillsets in executive function, SLPs can provide more comprehensive and effective support to individuals with communication disorders, empowering them to achieve their full potential.

What advice would you give to other SLPs on how to stay inspired and motivated in their practice with a busy schedule?

Staying inspired and motivated as a Speech-Language Pathologist can be challenging with a busy schedule. It’s crucial to establish strong boundaries to avoid burnout and create space for inspiration and joy.

Many of us in this field are naturally empathetic and driven to help our clients, which can sometimes lead to overworking and neglecting our own needs. However, it’s important to remember that setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s essential for our own well-being and ultimately allows us to provide the best possible care to our clients.

When we’re overworked and overwhelmed, our creativity and compassion can diminish. Setting clear boundaries, such as only answering emails during work hours, adhering to strict practice policies, and prioritizing personal time, allows us to recharge and return to work with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology?

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been everyone’s cheerleader. Growing up the oldest of three, I found myself as a natural leader & caretaker. My two younger siblings received speech therapy, and I was in awe of its transformative effect on their confidence and communication. I was captivated by science, always eager to understand how things worked, and simultaneously, I found myself drawn to the stage, reveling in the power of storytelling and the art of communication. I soon realized that speech therapy and theater had many parallels, including quick thinking, improvisation, imagination, and collaboration. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect role for me!

What is one thing you’ve learned in your Speech Therapy practice you wish all people knew?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my Speech-Language Pathology practice is that your self-worth as an SLP is NOT defined by whether or not you own your own business, how many followers you have, or even how much money you make. Social media often portrays entrepreneurship as glamorous and effortless, creating an unrealistic expectation that owning a practice is the pinnacle of success.

The reality is that building a successful private practice requires immense dedication, time, and often, significant sacrifices. It’s a challenging path, and your value as a clinician is not diminished if you choose a different career path. Your impact on the lives of your clients is what truly defines your success. Do what works for YOU!
